Book a Room Near Lincoln’ Best Tourist Attractions

The East Midland city of Lincoln, with its mild temperature, is a fantastic resort for tourists all around the world. Throughout its long history, Lincoln has seen a number of important events in British history. Built as a fortress for Romans, it became a flourishing settlement around the first century CE. It was the site of a battle between King Stephen and Empress Matilda in 1141 and was a frontier during the English Civil War of 1642 to 1651. This long history has left remarkable attractions for avid sightseers. Let’s take a look at some of the most amazing sites in Lincoln to visit:

Lincoln Cathedral

Constructed in Gothic style, Lincoln Cathedral is one of the monumental remnants of the High Middle Ages. For hundreds of years, it was assumed to be the tallest building in the UK, and even Europe. And in the present day, its glamour and remarkable architecture are what makes it distinct. The cathedral is also known for the unique architecture of its vaults, making every area of the place distinguishable from the next.

The exterior of this magnificent building boasts immaculate design, and the stained-glass windows as well as the stone ceiling and arches are spectacular and eye-catching. Inside the cathedral, the library contains around 270 very rare old manuscripts and their topics span from theology and law to music and literature.

Lincoln Castle

This Norman monument was first constructed during the 11th Century, and for years it has been used as prison and court. Nowadays Lincoln Castle is open to the public and is considered a major landmark of Lincoln.

The Castle itself consists of three main attractions:

  •         Victorian Prison: This prison was designed for what is called ‘separate system’, a confinement unit to make evildoers reflect and repent. As a visitor, you will be able to explore this system, look up the cells, and even hear prisoners’ stories.
  •         Medieval Wall Walk: This stone wall provides a wonderful walking path, with a spectacular view of the countryside and the city.
  •         Magna Carta: This royal charter was agreed upon between King John and the barons in 1215. The original charter is preserved in Lincoln Castle, and the section hosting the charter provides a great opportunity to explore the story of King John, and all the events leading to the signing of this seal.

Steep Hill

Steep Hill is a historic walking area, that links Lincoln Cathedral on its top to Well Lane at the bottom. This cobblestone street is famed for its gradient, which makes it extremely hard to go up and down, and some difficult areas have handrails to climb.

The Steep Hill accommodate several significant historical sites that are worth a visit. The Mayor’s Chair, a traditional resort for weary travellers to rest, is on the top of the hill. Just past it is Harding House Gallery. Also, there are two Norman houses, dating back to the 12th and 13th Centuries.

There are lots of shops on the street you can browse. The houses containing the shops are themselves of historical significance. Cafés and restaurants also provide a relaxing and calm atmosphere for all walkers of this uphill battle.

Hartsholme Country Park

For those interested in walking and hiking on natural grounds and watching wildlife, Hartsholme Country Park is the ideal place to visit. You can catch a glimpse of ducks on the lakes and sometimes herons, and for fishing, there is an allocated fishing area too. The play area is pretty large and suited for children of all ages. It is a great resort for camping and caravans. Picnic benches are also available.

And finally, the visitor’s centre holds exhibitions with interactive facilities to show the history of the park and its amazing wildlife.
