Book Your Accommodation near Top Sights in Garve

Located in the Highland Council Area, Garve boasts similar characteristics and weather conditions to that of other Highland villages. River Black Water passes through the village and most of the natural attractions nearby have some connection with the river and the heights surrounding it. The most interesting places to see near Garve are listed below:

  • 1.7 kilometres southeast of Garve is Loch Garve, a tree-lined lake boasting natural beauty. Its southwest shore faces A835 truck road, and is sometimes used for recreational fishing. Rainbow trout, brown trout, pike, perch and kelpie are some of the species of fish living in the lake.
  • Little Garve Playpark is a few miles from Black Water Falls, and is a site of great entertainment for kids with wooden climbing structures in place. Some wooden tables and picnic sections are also available and can be used for breakfast or lunch. Meanwhile, visitors will enjoy the stunning scenery, listen to the sound of the river, or walk alongside it.
  • Ben Wyvis National Nature Reserve takes its name from the nearby summit, Ben Wyvis, and refers to the plateau of the mountain, slopes and crags that cover around 2300 hectares of land. It is a favourite place for hillwalkers, and many use the route for hiking to Ben Wyvis. If planning an ascend, you must be aware of weather conditions as there are some windy and pouring days that may make the hiking difficult.
  • Black Water Falls is located on the west of Ben Wyvis, around 3 and a half miles from Loch Garve, and consists of several cascades whose beauty is unsurpassed in the highlands. Taking a walk on the old stone bridge is very rewarding with a fantastic view of the surroundings and waterfalls. In terms of facilities, it is one of the best-maintained attractions in the area, with toilet, wheelchair access and parking provided.
  • Little Garve Bridge was constructed by Major William Caulfield in 1767 on Black Water, and aside from its historical importance, it is a great fun for hikers and a wonderful resting place. On its other side, there is a children’s playground, wonderful for kids to spend time in.
  • Tarvie Lochs are less than 4 miles from Garve, and are a series of fishing lakes famous for their blue trout and rainbow. Adjacent parking is available and boats can be utilised for fishing.
  • 4 miles from Garve, Rogie Falls is another gem in the Highlands, often famed for salmon viewing. This popular attraction also has several forest walks that are really refreshing. A stroll on the suspension bridge gives you an even more wholesome view of the falls and the spectacular surroundings. The car park is a few minutes from the falls, and there are public toilets available, too.
  • Going westward from Garve takes you to Grudie Bridge, a nice place for fishing and catching sight of the wildlife. Grudie Bridge Power Station, which was built in 1951, is just a few feet away and Kinlochluichart & Strathgarve Church is only half a mile.
  • There are several great mountain peaks in the area, great for hikers and mountain climbers. Beinn Dearg is the highest of what is called the Four Munros circuit. Before getting to the rocky terrain near the top, the terrain below has a fine stalkers’ path and good forest track. At 1009 metres high, you will have Sgurr Mor, situated between Loch Fannich and the A835 Ullapool road. Further south is Fionn Bheinn, another impressive munro, which is usually accessible from Achnasheen.
